A successful Cumbrian business wants to create a new children’s swim school because it has reached capacity at its existing premises.
The Lakeland Swim School, which currently operates from the Embleton Spa Hotel, is for youngsters up to 16 years old.
The family-owned business was set up three-and-a-half years ago.
The school wants to convert a former substation on the site of the old High Duty Alloys facility at Lillyhall, now called Discovery Park.
The 42 acre site has planning for industrial use and its owners said it had the potential for several different uses, subject to planning.
Louise Watson, The Lakeland Swim School owner, said: “The swim school teaches bespoke swimming lessons following the STA and RLSS Rookie Programme from the ages of 12 weeks to circa 16 years of age.
“The 12-week to four years parent and child groups are taught by myself through another company, Watson’s Waders Baby Swimmers, which is also owned by myself.
“The Lakeland Swim School teaches four years-plus by Chris Watson, myself and a range of teachers and helpers. Both companies currently teach 410 children by four qualified teachers and seven assistants.”
The former single-storey substation is currently empty and the new facility would be contained within the existing structure.
The application is currently under consideration by planning officers at the council.
