Des Byrne (by Ben Challis)

Tributes have been paid to Des Byrne, who has died.

Mr Byrne was a stalwart at Whitehaven Rugby Club, and was chairman, director and team manager at various points during his long association with the club.

The club said: “Des was and forever will be a part of this great club.

“His unwavering loyalty to all things Whitehaven shone through at any opportunity.

“Des was a chairman, a director and our team manager there wasn’t anything about the club he didn’t know.

“He became someone that each year players and staff would turn to for guidance.

“Words are tough to find for a man like Des but there’s one thing we can all agree on he will be missed beyond measure.

“All at and associated with Whitehaven RLFC would like to send out deepest condolences to the Byrne family.

“Our love goes to Margaret, Vikki and Anna at this difficult time you’re all in our thoughts.”
