Workington Zebra Finches began 2025 by moving up to the top of League 2 North after a dramatic – indeed, extraordinary 15-12 success away to bottom club Yarnbury, writes John Hastings.
It is a result that will go down as one of Workington’s finest victories, as it was achieved against al odds – the Finches having only 15 fit players with no replacements plus an almost three-hour coach trip to West Yorkshire, as well as twice being down to 14 during the match.
Two tries from Megan Donald – giving her 11 for the season – and one from Megan Mayhew-Beach were enough to take the points, although Yarnbury made it uncomfortably tough for the Finches with dangerous attacks and doughty scrummaging.
Despite the injury list than meant an empty bench, Workington were boosted by the return of key players including Lottie Cammack – who efficiently marshalled the forwards while delivering crucial carries and drives.
Steph Ratcliffe returned at scrum-half and made several hard-hitting tackles as well as providing impeccable support for the forwards.
Once again, Workington’s flexibility paid off as Beth Sunderland filled in at centre alongside the returning Elsa Whelan to create an efficient, energetic partnership that Yarnbury struggled to contain.
The hosts launched several late attacks in order to snatch an unlikely victory, but Workington rode the storm and a wave of joy and relief greeted the final whistle – it’s safe to say that the 139-mile coach journey return home will have been a lot sweeter and refreshing – especially having gone top of the table.
No decision has been made yet on the twice postponed fixture at The Ellis, but both sides will face off again in the RFU Community Plate Quarter Final in West Yorkshire on March 9.
