Pupils from two Carlisle schools will be guided home after Storm Eowyn caused issues with the temporary canopy of the city’s Sands Centre.
The high winds caused damage to the temporary canopy installed as part of the RAAC replacement on the Sands’ auditorium roof.
As a result and as a precautionary measure, the decision was made to temporarily close the pedestrian and cyclist use of Eden Bridge, Memorial Bridge (leading into Rickerby Park) and all other routes into Rickerby Park to minimise risk.
The closures impacted on pupils at Trinity School and Stanwix Primary School.
A Cumberland Council spokesman said: “Arrangements are being made to provide a safe route over Eden Bridge, Carlisle for children leaving Trinity School and Stanwix Primary School this afternoon.
“Cumberland Council has contacted the affected schools and with the support of the schools and Cumbria police will provide a fully stewarded route across Eden Bridge (western side only).
“For Trinity School pupils this will avoid Zero path and will divert them under the Georgian Way underpass, lead to the Hardwicke Circus underpass into Bitts Park and then over Eden Bridge towards Stanwix.
“Stanwix School pupils students who need to walk over the bridge into the city centre will also be stewarded to follow the same route on to Eden Bridge.
“Eden Bridge remains open to traffic.
“School buses and parents are advised to use Strand Road as their pick-up point and not Duke Street. Newmarket Road remains closed.
“The Sands Centre leisure centre, Sands Centre car park and Swifts car park remain closed. Do not return to vehicles if you are parked in these car parks until you are advised it is safe to do so.”
Richard Rose Central Rose Academy is closed today.
Eden Bridge in Carlisle remains closed to other pedestrians and cyclists.
