A rising star in the world of junior golf has represented Cumbria on the international stage at a prestigious championship.
Nine-year-old Florence Martindale, of Barrow, was in Spain for her first overseas tournament, in the Daily Mail World Junior Golf Championships, competing against some of the best young golfers from around the world.
Playing on a challenging mountainous course, Florence’s highlight moment came during her second round, where she eagled the first hole with a stunning 30ft putt.
She also birdied her favourite hole, the 9th, multiple times, mastering its precision-demanding tee shot.
The tournament provided her with an unforgettable experience, allowing her to test her skills against an international field while making new golf friends from countries such as Japan, Morocco, and the Philippines.
Florence finished in the top five of the tournament.
Florence’s journey was made even more special with the support of The Big Golf Company, a proud Cumbrian-based business committed to growing the game of golf and supporting young talent.
Chris North, CEO of The Big Golf Company, said: “Upon reading the news on Cumbria Crack that Florence had made it through to the Daily Mail World Junior Golf Championship, we were keen to support her – not only because we are a Cumbrian-based business, but also to encourage more young girls and women to take up golf and experience the joy it brings.”
Florence is a member of three golf clubs – Barrow, Ulverston, and Carus Green – where she thrives on the different challenges each course offers.
She is coached by Andrew Waple, with putting guidance from Adam Lynn, both based at Carus Green Golf Centre.
While excelling in golf, Florence also balances her education at Newbarns Primary School.
Her passion for the game, combined with her dedication and talent, positions her as one of Cumbria’s most exciting young golfers to watch, Chris added.
He said: “Florence’s success at the Daily Mail World Junior Golf Championships marks just the beginning of her international journey. With continued dedication and support from The Big Golf Company and her local golf community, she is set to achieve even greater heights in the golfing world.”
