Cockermouth stay in control

Cockermouth stay top of the Cumberland League Premier Division after a 5-1 win over Keswick (Ben Challis)

In the Cumberland County League on Saturday, there was a cup semi final plus some big matches in the Premier Division title race.

In a repeat of last season’s final, Wigton Harriers welcomed Maryport Athletic to Barton Laws as these two sides met in this Benevolent Cup semi final encounter.

Maryport got off to a great start after Cameron Cater was on target 13 minutes In to make it 1-0.

In the second half Wigton battled hard looking for a equaliser however some great saves from Maryport’s goalkeeper Ciaran Booty prevented them from hitting the back of the net.

Wigton thought that they had a late goal however the referee assistant deemed that the ball hadn’t crossed the line.

Despite Cameron Harker getting sent off for a second bookable offence in the 88th minute, Maryport Athletic won the tie 1-0 and will now face Division One champions Workington Juniors in the final, date and venue to be confirmed.

Elsewhere, all focus was on the Premier Division title race. Cockermouth who were top of the league and in control at the start of the day, travelled to Keswick and they earned themselves a 5-1 victory.

Luke Graham netted twice with, Rob Cox, Kyran Bertram and Lewis White also on target for Cockermouth that keeps them in the race with one match remaining. However Maryport are the only side that can now catch them mathematically with three matches in hand. Alfie West scored for Keswick.

Despite now out the running for the title, Unisun Athletic got themselves a big 7-2 win against Cleator Moor Celtic Reserves with goals from Ellis Dickinson, Josh Morley, Shane Dorward and braces from Jake Nicholson and Ollie Reay. Ethan Thornton and Brad Barwise were both on target for Celtic.

Nathan Walkingshaw and Bradley O’Pray both scored twice for Whitehaven Miners Social to help them to a 5-1 win against Aspatria. Connor Woodend also scored for Miners with Aspatria goal coming courtesy of Dan Pearson.

In Division One, champions Workington Juniors got back to winning ways after last weekends cup defeat with a 4-0 victory against Unisun Athletic Youth Development with goals from Macauley Sharp (2), Niall Melton and Chad Grisdale.

Bransty Rangers got themselves a 6-2 win against Silloth with Spike Canavan, Harvey Law, Stewart O’Pray, Dean Relph, Joe Dobinson and Lewis McCartney all scoring. Matthew Scott and Jackson Slack scored for Silloth.

Whitehaven AFC Reserves managed to edge past Windscale Reserves 4-2. Shane Tyson, Joe Carney and Cody Meagan with two netted for Whitehaven while Kieren Frazer and Charlie Storey were Windscale goal scorers.

A Troy Paterson goal gave Cockermouth Reserves a 1-0 win against Whitehaven Miners Social.

Elsewhere, there was some League Cup 1 Group Stage action as Mirehouse beat Dearham United 7-1 with goals from Darrian Dunn, Jack Burns, Callum Wilson Jordan Priestley, Ethan Smith and Kyle bayliff with a brace. Lewis Manchester scored for Dearham.
