A dedicated Cumbrian football volunteer has been recognised for their work in prestigious awards.

Tom Banks is a volunteer groundskeeper at Kirkoswald FC. He was named groundsperson of the year at the Grounds Management Association Industry Awards 2025, which took place at Liverpool’s Anfield stadium.

The event celebrates excellence in grounds management across professionals and volunteers, highlighting the unsung heroes who ensure playing surfaces are in top condition year-round.

Kirkoswald FC, founded in 1946, plays in Division 1 of the Westmorland League in Cumbria.

Tom said: “It’s really special to win this award. There are loads of volunteers in this industry and it’s brilliant we’re being represented and recognised at a national event like this.

“I so rewarding looking after the pitch and making sure the team and players have got the best surface to play on. My wife says it’s a bit of an obsession – but I love it!

“Grounds management is about more than just maintaining pitches – it’s about making sure teams can play, kids can train, and communities can come together through sport.

“This recognition is not just for me, but for all the volunteers out there who give their time and effort to keep local pitches and green spaces in great shape.”

Geoff Webb, CEO of the Grounds Management Association, added: “The GMA Industry Awards are all about celebrating the dedication and skill of grounds teams across all levels – and volunteers play a huge role in keeping grassroots sport alive.

“People like Tom are the backbone of local clubs and communities, working tirelessly to ensure matches can go ahead and local spaces are well maintained. Their work deserves more recognition, and we hope this will inspire others to get involved.”
