Litter on the A590 into Barrow has been branded an ‘absolute disgrace’.
Councillor Anne Burns (Old Barrow and Hindpool, Labour) urged Westmorland and Furness Council to take action to address the issue of litter on the way into Barrow at a cabinet meeting on March 18.
Cllr Burns called the litter on the A590 absolutely disgraceful and said: “I don’t know what’s happening, but it’s never been like that before.”
Cabinet member for climate, biodiversity and environmental services, Councillor Giles Archibald said the council was very aware of the issue.
The Liberal Democrat councillor also told cabinet members the authority was carrying out enforcement to tackle the issue.
Cllr Archibald added: “We have a suspicion of which businesses this might be, but I wouldn’t mention this in a public meeting.
“We are onto both of those things, we are aware of this, we want to seek remediation, and officers are working on that now.”
Cllr Burns added: “We want our streets clean, we want our area coming into Barrow not to look like a tatty add-on to this authority.”
Cllr Archibald said: “We’re very aware of this, it’s not an easy problem to solve because you can’t just send out people to pick up litter by the side of the road, you have to get the highways authority to agree to certain safety precautions.”
Cllr Burns warned there was an epidemic of litter in Barrow at a council meeting in January.
The Labour councillor said at the time that residents in the wards she represented did not have a lot of room to put the bins out and added when there was wind, the litter swirled all over the place.
Cllr Burns added: “I’ve got nothing but praise for the people who are going out there and doing a job now and the officers trying to cope with all of this.
“We’ve got an epidemic of litter in our streets and we need something doing about it now.”
Cllr Archibald told the council he was going to have a walk around the area with officers.
“We certainly want to come up with appropriate solutions that the locality board and the town council are comfortable with,” Cllr Archibald added.
