
UPDATE SATURDAY APRL 5 6pm – Sparks from the Tangmere have caused several wildfires alongside the Cumbrian Coast Line. The Blue Peter has returned to Carlisle and firefighters are tackling dozens of blazes.
Two steam trains will be in Cumbria this weekend.
It promises to be a steam train special for the Cumbrian Coast Line as two locomotives will be travelling down it on Saturday afternoon.
The SR 4-6-2 Tangmere will be making its way through the county first.
It will be travelling on the coast line from Carlisle to York from 1.38pm.
It is named after the military airfield in Sussex and is a Battle of Britain class locomotive, completed at Southern Railway’s Brighton works in September 1947 and given the number 21C167. Following the nationalisation of Britain’s railways, Tangmere was renumbered 34067 in July 1949.
The locomotive was returned to steam in October 2021 following an overhaul which included fitting the boiler from class mate 34073 249 Squadron.
Tangmere is owned by David Smith who owns Steamtown Railway Museum Ltd depot at Carnforth, the holding company for West Coast Railways.
The locomotive is normally based at the company’s second base the former Great Western Railway depot at Southall Railway Centre, West London.
It returned to the main line at the end of January 2022 when it hauled the Winter Cumbrian Mountain Express.

Later on Saturday afternoon, Saphos is running its Lakelander tour. Passengers will have travelled from Wales and are due to arrive in Carlisle at 12.30pm.
After spending two hours in the city, they will return down the coastal line.
It is understood it will be pulled by the by the Blue Peter. She is the last remaining LNER Class A2 Pacific and is one of the most powerful express passenger locomotives in the UK.
Designed by Arthur H Peppercorn, she was one of 15 locomotives in her class, entering service in 1948 and has undergone an eight-year overhaul.
