Champions confirmed in dramatic snooker league finals

In a dramatic final round of the L&L Property Contractors Snooker League, United Club A held firm to clinch the division 1 title and Workington Conservative Club took the division 2 championship. 

United A ensured there was no room for top tier title doubt as they whitewashed fellow division 1 side Workington Veterans Club A 5-0, in superb home performance. 

Mark Suitor got the home side off to a flyer with a commanding 73-44 win over Vets A’s Stephen O’Hagan, before United A’s Clive Lister doubled the lead with a 61-30 success against Mark Tatton.

Peter O’Hagan made it 3-0 with a composed 63-36 win over Vets A’s Paul Smith, and United A captain Andrew Mitchelhill extended the lead further with a 64-23 victory against Sal Cakmak.

In the last frame of the match Dave Chapman was allowed the luxury of enjoying the title celebrations as a walkover meant a 5-0 victory and a first United A division 1 title. 

United A topped the table with 56 points while Vets Club A finish third overall on 48 points. 

Workington Conservative Club galvanised their division 2 title with a 3-2 win over Whitehaven’s Rack Shack to finish with an impressive 46 points and ensure their return to the top division. 

Alan Moore got Cons off to the perfect start with a 62-21 win over namesake Andy Moore. Cons soon doubled their lead as Julian Plaza defeated Lee Dougherty in a close 42-31 win, nevertheless it was Neil Dougherty who hit back for the Rack Shack with a 67-33 victory against David Holland to pull one back at 2-1.

Ryan Barker ensured the match win went in Cons favour in frame four with as a 57-33 victory over Chris McKelvey for 3-1 but it was Adam Morilla who closed the gap in the final frame of the match by defeating Brian Kendall 49-11 in a tactical contest. 

The Rack Shack finished second in division 2 on 33 points. 

Workington Conservative Club

Station Road secured second place in division 1 in emphatic fashion as they defeated division 2’s Veterans Club B 5-0 in a commanding away performance between the two Workington sides. 

Station Road’s Tom Thompson set the tone early with a 67-48 win over Wayne Sinclair, while Kevin Kirkham followed up with a solid 64-27 performance against United B’s Jordan Ferguson.

Frame three saw Station Road’s John Teasdale preside 48-41 in a black ball triumph over Simon Tootle while Station Road team mates Chris Hunter and Darren Lawson completed the clean sweep with wins over Lewis Straughton (73-49) and Paul Johnston (53-48) respectively. 

Station Road finished on 54 points while Vets B ended propping up the division 2 table on 18 points. 

Workington’s United Club B ended their season on a high with a hard-fought 3-2 win against division 1’s Workington Golf Club to clinch third place in the division 2 table. 

United B’s Stephen Harrison got the visitors going with a stylish 67-41 win over Bryan Walker. Although Golf A’s Ryan Ismay hit back strongly with a 58-12 victory against Adam Sowden for 1-1 it was United B’s Shane Tallentire who edged a scrappy frame over Simon Fraser, 55-18, to put United B ahead again at 2-1. United B captain Stephen Jackson then secured the match victory on the back of a classy 62-49 triumph over Mark Brasted for a 3-1 lead.

Mark Cowan salvaged a final frame point for the for the home team however, beating Andrew Carter 60-17 to leave his side just one adrift at 3-2.

Workington Golf Club finished fourth in division 1 on 43 points and are unfortunately relegated, while United B’s second place in division 2 was achieved via greater win ratio on a points total of 32.

Maryport Social, who completed their fixtures a week early, dropped to fourth and finished on 30 points.
