Waste collection changes are now underway in West Cumbria.
Cumberland Council said fortnightly waste collections started from Monday May 26, which means around a half of all Allerdale properties will have no waste collection this week.
Those that had a collection this week will have no collection next week.
Residents are also being urged to check their updated collection dates on the council’s website.
Following feedback, the council is in the process of creating some new printable calendars. These will soon be available to download from the council’s website.
The council is also continuing to deliver replacement 180 litre bins – of which the council has already received over 10,500 requests.
Due to the large number of requests, they are advising residents that don’t get their new bin over the next few weeks to carry on using their existing bin and are encouraging them to recycle as much as they can.
If they can’t fit all their waste into their bin, residents can put out up to two bags of excess waste.
The council also said that residents that have provided an email address when requesting a replacement bin, will be contacted a day or a few days before the delivery.
Householders may also be eligible for an even larger or extra bin if they have a large household, young children in nappies or your household produces extra waste due to medical needs.
Applications can be made on the council’s website.
Cardboard/paper collections will also increase from monthly to fortnightly from late September 2025.
The council has reviewed their collection service, and the changes provide a more efficient service and make recycling easier. New consistent approaches to missed collections and other standards are also now in place. They can be viewed on the council’s website.
