A unique Lake District race is set to return for its fifth year.
On Saturday July 5, Honister Slate Mine will once again host the Bowels of Fleetwith.
The 6km course challenges runners with a blend of rugged open fell and a rare underground section through 1km of Honister’s historic slate mine tunnels.
The route includes an ascent of approximately 1,500 metres, taking in two iconic Wainwright summits, Fleetwith Pike (648m) and Grey Knotts (697m).
The race begins at Honister Slate Mine, with runners setting off on a steep incline before entering the mountain via an old mine entrance.
Equipped with helmets and head torches, participants pass through a series of underground chambers and passageways, areas not usually accessible to the public.
Emerging part way up Fleetwith Pike, they remove their equipment and continue the ascent before traversing to Grey Knotts and descending back to the finish.
The event has gained popularity among seasoned athletes and newcomers alike and while challenging, the route is open to all with a strong sense of adventure and a willingness to push their limits.
The event is open to runners aged 16 and over, with those under 18 required to be accompanied by a responsible adult. The entry fee is £30 per person, and booking is essential due to very limited capacity.
