A major sports event for over-60s will be held in Cumbria later this year.
Organised by GLL, the charitable social enterprise that operates Better leisure centres in Cumberland, the Better Club Games will take place at the Sands Centre in Carlisle in September.
The event will bring together people aged 60-plus from 11 Better leisure centres across the Cumberland Council area to compete in activities including badminton, pickleball, water polo, carpet bowls, rowing, table tennis and a danceathon, culminating in a prestigious awards ceremony.
Chloe Nixon, GLL’s community sports manager at The Sands Centre, said: “This is a fantastic initiative designed to keep seniors active, foster new friendships, and improve their social, mental and physical wellbeing.
“This event allows us to celebrate the sporting talent amongst our older members who regularly attend our wide range of tailored sessions, while demonstrating the benefits that regular exercise and an active lifestyle can bring.
“It will be a race to the finish as we pit contestants from Cumberland against each other in a diverse range of competitive activities.”
Better leisure centres in Cumberland are managed by GLL on Cumberland Council’s behalf.
The Better Club Games is a nationwide programme developed by GLL to address a perceived lack of major, multi-sports events in the UK that brings together older adults in the spirit of fun competition.
The games are designed to support and encourage active aging, showcasing the capabilities of older people through sport and promoting the benefits of physical activity for all ages.
