A major Roman dig in Carlisle is underway and open to visitors.
Uncovering Roman Carlisle, at the city’s cricket club, runs until July 5.
Previous digs have unearthed a Roman Imperial site and bathhouse.
Archaeologists and volunteers hope to excavate so far unexplored parts of the site to discover more about the monumental palace building with a bathhouse and a mysterious area to the south of the large main building where there has been found a possible Roman temple site.
The true size of the building, currently estimated at over 50m x 40m, is one of the remaining mysteries of the site.
Visitors are welcome to visit the site from 10am to 4pm Monday to Saturday.
Frank Giecco, technical director at Wardell Armstrong said: “We could not have done this without the support of so many individuals and local businesses who have very kindly supported us.
“We are humbled by the support in public donations and the incredible match funding generosity from an anonymous international donor.

“We are still fundraising and hope to hear back from some applications soon to grow the current excavation and provide more opportunities for volunteers to dig. Keep checking the website to book on, and we hope to see you on site!
“The site is looking great, and some really interesting new features are already coming to light.
“The big part of the site we are excavating this year is the mysterious area to the south of the large Imperial building with a bathhouse, where we have previously found sculpture, pottery, disturbed burials and ritual deposits, and a possible temple site and ritual area.”
This project is delivered by the Uncovering Roman Carlisle, a charitable organisation with support from Cumberland Council, Carlisle Cricket Club, Wardell Armstrong LLP and Tullie.

The excavation hopes to discover more about a unique and important international archaeological site, and in doing so has won awards for supporting communities and place, people and skills. The project will allow members of the public to take part in the community excavation or visit free of charge.
Limited spaces are available for volunteers. No prior experience in archaeology is needed, just enthusiasm in learning about Carlisle’s past.
