A road was closed by police after debris fell off a roof in a Cumbrian town centre.

Devonshire Street in Penrith was blocked after a report of falling debris from a building in the area, this morning, Thursday June 26.

It is understood that the debris – believed to be a slate – fell on the front of a car and then bounced to hit the back window.

A crew from Cumbria Fire & Rescue Service arrived and assessed roofs on the street and a drone was also deployed.

Drivers were asked to avoid the route where possible.

The road reopened at around 10.55am.

Police received the report at around 8.10am.
