Mystery surrounds future of West Cumbrian pub

The Briery, Stainburn

Mystery surrounds the future of a West Cumbrian pub after it appears to have suddenly closed.

Customers who had booked a table at the Briery in Stainburn earlier this week for lunch yesterday, Thursday July 3, arrived to find the venue locked up and no-one there.

The Workington pub’s website, where previously customers could book for meals, has been reduced to a single page.

This week, pub company Trust Inns has advertised the fully refurbished venue as available to let.

The pub was taken on by award-winning chef Mark Greenaway last year, who spent months revamping it.

It officially opened in October as a gastropub.

At the time, the chef, who has restaurants in the Lake District, Edinburgh and London, said he fell in love with the building

The reopening created 17 jobs and Mark said: “It will be a gastropub that is for the community, with a great price point.”

This year, it recently launched its five newly refurbished rooms.

The Briery has been contacted for comment.
