Two long-standing members of the Cumberland FA Walking Football League have worn the England shirt at the sport’s world championships in Sweden and brought home gold and silver medals.
The international event, held over three days in Malmö, featured top walking footballers from around the globe in age-group categories ranging from over-40s to over-75s.
Carlisle-based players Nicky Gash and John Sander, known locally as Ted, were reunited on the international stage more than 35 years after playing together in local sides – Nicky formerly with Netherfield and Ted with Annan Athletic.
Nicky was part of the England Over-65s squad that triumphed in Malmö, taking home the world title after a thrilling win over hosts Sweden in the final.
Meanwhile, Ted made his England debut for the Over-70s.
His team also progressed to their group final after a strong campaign but narrowly missed out on the title with a loss to Norway in the final.
Both players are regulars in the Cumberland FA Walking Football League, which offers opportunities for older players to stay active, social, and competitive in the sport they love.
Ray Sempill, football development officer at Cumberland FA said: “I would like to send my congratulations to Ted and Nicky on behalf of the Cumberland FA Walking Football League on their achievement at a worldwide walking football competition.
“Both have been involved in the Cumberland League for many years and helped to promote walking football locally.
“Their achievement shows that it’s possible to play at the very highest level in the walking football format.
“Walking football is a slower-paced, inclusive format of the game ideal for players aged 50 and above, or those returning from injury. Whether you’re a beginner or a former player, there are opportunities for everyone.”
