Police officers deployed pepper spray after a man issued repeated threats of violence.
South Lakes Police said officers used PAVA, a synthetic pepper spray, at an incident in Grange.
South Lakes Police said: “Owing to his presentation, his repeated threats of violence and his unwillingness to listen to reasoned appeal – he was subject to PAVA which almost instantaneously had the desired effect.
“It’s likely that he’ll spend the night with us as we’ll have some questions to ask him in the morning around how he went from enjoying the Euros to ending up in one of our cells.”
PAVA is a chemical composition in a small tin which, when deployed, primarily affects the eyes.
South Lakes Police added: “It forces the recipient to close them. It’s uncomfortable to say the least and provides a stinging sensation for up to an hour, the effect is temporary and wears off gradually.
“The deployment of PAVA is considered a use of force and is quite rightly highly scrutinised.
“Officers who choose to deploy it must ensure that they are satisfied the tactic is proportionate and necessary.
“To that end, if you ever see a constable deploying PAVA at an incident, its highly likely that other tactics have been ineffective.”
The man was arrested.
