Free Christmas parking is on offer for shoppers in the run-up to Christmas in South and east Cumbria.

Free parking will be offered in Westmorland and Furness Council-operated pay-and-display car parks in Barrow, Penrith and South Lakeland on Thursday afternoons after 2pm.

Councillor Peter Thornton, Cabinet Member for Highways and ICT, said: “Our free parking offer is one way we show our support for the diverse, unique and vibrant shops in our towns and villages in the run-up to Christmas.

“Free parking on a Thursday will help revive the late-night shopping experience many of us remember growing up, supporting a lively and welcoming evening atmosphere.

“I would appeal to everybody looking to do some Christmas shopping to support their local shops and to take the time to experience all the brilliant amenities and attractions these places have to offer.”
