An M6 driver has appeared in court after almost £180,000 cash was found in a vehicle stopped by police in north Cumbria.
London-based Charles Young, 31, was detained by officers in the Carlisle area yesterday as he made what was said to have been a return journey from Scotland on the motorway.
A prosecutor alleged at the city’s magistrates’ court this morning that a rucksack found behind a passenger seat contact four sealed bags.
Inside were mixed English and Scottish bank notes with an estimated total value of £179,550.
Young faces one charge which alleges that he acquired, used or possessed criminal property. During a short court hearing, he entered no plea to that allegation.
Deputy district judge Matthew Wallace sent the case to Carlisle Crown Court.
Young, of Lewisham, is due to appear there for a plea and trial preparation hearing on March 5.
In the meantime he has been remanded in custody after an application for bail, made by a defence solicitor, was refused
