A few days before the fourth anniversary of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine by Russia, members of the Ukrainian community and local residents came together in Carlisle to mark the date with reflection, culture and solidarity.
The event was organised by Carlisle Cumbria Ukrainian Hub and held at Currock House in Carlisle. The gathering offered an opportunity to learn more about Ukraine’s ongoing struggle while celebrating its rich traditions and strong community spirit.
Helen Plotnikova and Hanna Borishpol opened the evening with a powerful video showing a school in Kyiv coping with extreme cold and repeated power cuts caused by continued attacks on infrastructure. The footage served as a stark reminder of the hardships still faced by families and children across Ukraine.
Following the presentation, a choir made up of Hub members known as Mallows, performed a selection of traditional Ukrainian songs. The emotional performances reflected both sorrow and resilience, with many in the audience visibly moved.
Guests then shared a range of traditional Ukrainian dishes, all prepared by members of the community. The food provided a taste of home for Ukrainians living in Cumbria and an opportunity for others to experience authentic Ukrainian cuisine.
Odessa-based Steve Hodgson, who moved from Tebay at the start of the war, attended the evening. Steve has dedicated his life to transporting medical and humanitarian aid from the UK charities directly to those in need. Steve delivers aid donated by Cumbrians via Cumbria Aid Ukraine to Ukraine.
Supported by Multicultural Cumbria, the evening highlighted the strength of community ties in Carlisle and reaffirmed continued support for Ukraine as the anniversary approaches.
