A man has been jailed for possession with intent to supply drugs after he was stopped by police on the M6 while in possession of cocaine and heroin.

Mark McAvoy, 39, of Millarston Avenue, Paisley, was driving northbound between junctions 39 and 40 on 31 December 2025 when police stopped his car – a Vauxhall Insignia.

The officer carried out a search and found a cardboard box in the boot.

Upon opening it he found 10 wrapped bricks of white powder, which tests later proved to be cocaine.

The bricks were found to be between 1.1kg  and 1.2kg each.

Two further bags of suspected cocaine were also recovered, giving a total of more than 11.5kg of cocaine.

A brown powder was also recovered, which tests indicated to be 37g of heroin.

McAvoy was arrested and subsequently charged with two counts of possession of class A drugs – one count for cocaine and the other for heroin.

He admitted the offences at court and was yesterday sentenced at Carlisle Crown Court to 44 months in prison.

After sentencing, Detective Constable Hugh Poward said: “This is the latest example of our officers stopping a vehicle travelling through the county and uncovering evidence of possession with intent to supply class A drugs offences.

“This stop resulted in a significant amount of drugs being recovered and a prison sentence being handed down by the courts.

“We have officers on our county’s roads 24/7, 365 days a year on the lookout for people involved in the supply of drugs.”
