Dearham United have clinched the Division One title in the Cumberland County League.
They beat Whitehaven Miners Development 3-0 and can’t now be caught. Oliver Scott, Jack Brown and Danny Dryden scored the goals.
They are eight points clear of their rivals Northbank who have just two games left to play.
But Northbank’s minds were concentrated on the Whitehaven Cup at the week-end where they made progress after a penalty shoot-out win over Premier Division Aspatria.
The Carlisle side won 5-4 on penalties after the tie had finished 2-2. Patrick Boyce scored both goals for Northbank in the 90 minutes.
The other Whitehaven Cup game saw Maryport Athletic go through 4-2 after a good test against Cockermouth.
Missing chances has been the story of Maryport’s season and it looked as though that was going to continue as they spurned several opportunities to take the lead.
Instead it was Cockermouth who went in front when Oscar Pickering scored from a free kick but Maryport responded quickly. Joe Douglas rifled a shot into the top corner from edge of the box.
Early in the second half Cockermouth re-took the lead after they won possession in mid-field and broke quickly for Luke Graham to make it 2-1 with a smart finish.
Again Maryport weren’t behind for long and this time it was Ciaran Laverty who showed good control to hold off several defenders before shooting home into the far corner.
Cockermouth continued to look dangerous on the break but Logan Bosward gave the home side the lead for the first time after an initial save by the Cockermouth keeper.
Maryport needed their own keeper Joe Rumney to keep them ahead with a quality save before Cam Harker sealed the game after some good build-up play.
The winners will be hoping for silverware compensation after losing the Premier Division title to Unisun Athletic.
Unisun beat Workington Juniors 4-0 and are now 12 points clear of Maryport who only have four games left to play.
Ollie Reay (2), Mikey Williamson and Liam Graham scored the goals for the Carlisle side.
The other two Premier Division games concerned the battle to avoid the drop between Keswick and Wigton Harriers.
Wigton, the League’s draw specialists, had an important 3-0 win at relegated Cleator Moor Celtic with Sam Irving, Harvey Gordon and Carl Lightfoot giving the Harriers their first league win of the season.
Keswick put up a great fight at Whitehaven Miners before losing 2-1 as Nathan Walkinshaw and Owen Woods won it for the west Cumbrians.
Having been deducted three points Keswick are now eight points behind Wigton with four games to play. The Harriers have three games left.
The other game was the semi-final of the Benevolent Cup and Division One side Silloth put up a great fight at Premier Division Mirehouse before going down 2-1. Lachlan Leeson and Joe McDonnell got the winning goals.
