Free parking in a Lake District town is set to be reduced to stop traffic bottlenecks.
Westmorland and Furness Council is looking at reducing the length of a parking bay on Stockghyll Lane in Ambleside to improve traffic flow and cut down on vehicles parking obstructively.
The bay, near the Ambleside Salutation Hotel and Spa, would be shortened by nine metres on its north side and 10 metres on its south side.
Double yellow lines would also be introduced.
A report to councillors said: “In March 2023, a temporary traffic regulation order was brought in to reduce the parking bay at Stockghyll Lane following concerns regarding larger vehicles having difficulty passing the parking bay.
“The bay was further reduced in September 2024 when it became clear that the issue still persisted.
“It is recognised that these parking bays are an important amenity to the local community and surrounding area and that retaining parking – albeit a shorter section – remains of significant importance.
“It is considered that the parking bays at this location are an important local amenity offering free short stay parking.”
Concerns were also raised at consultation about a white line, studs and flower boxes having been put in place on the street previously, but the council said that those were installed privately and without permission.
The report added: “A formal assessment has confirmed that the highway boundary is defined by the extent of the double yellow lines.
“Work is scheduled to remove the unauthorised line and studs, and the double yellow lines will be refreshed.”
Councillors will discuss the plans at a meeting of the South Lakeland Locality Board at Kendal Town Hall tomorrow, Thursday April 16.
