Bid to release beavers in Cumbrian rivers takes next step

A bid to release beavers in Cumbrian rivers has taken the next step.

Cumbria Connect has been invited by Natural England to prepare a full wild release licence application for beavers for the Eden catchment.

The decision followed the submission of an expression of interest developed in partnership with the Cumbria Beaver Group and through discussions with Natural England.

The application will now be developed and submitted to the authority to manage and support the recently confirmed wild beaver population within the area.

The Eden Catchment covers approximately 2,400sq km. It includes the River Lowther, where wild beavers were recently confirmed, alongside the Eamont, Petteril, Caldew and Irthing river systems.

Martin Varley, programme manager for Cumbria Connect, said: “Natural England has confirmed that a licensed approach offers the most responsible way forward for managing and supporting the existing wild population, supporting genetic diversity and establishing a sustainable beaver population within the catchment.

“A successful expression of interest does not grant permission for a release. It allows us to begin developing a detailed application and management plan in partnership with local communities, landowners, farmers, fisheries interests and statutory agencies.”

Any future application will be supported by consultation and engagement over the coming year.

Mr Varley added: “We recognise people will have questions and possibly some concerns, and we want to have those conversations openly.

“Experience from elsewhere in England and Scotland shows that where issues arise, there are proven management techniques available, and support can be put in place for land managers.

“Our aim is to develop a practical, evidence-based proposal that benefits nature while working alongside the people who live and work within the Eden catchment.”
