An investigation has been launched after a Stagecoach bus caught fire on the A69.
It had suffered a catastrophic engine failure.
Cumbria Fire & Rescue Service sent three crews to the scene, between Corby Hill and Hayton, at around 11.20am yesterday, Friday September 12.
It was a half open-top bus, usually seen serving the Lake District.
Stagecoach said its driver acted quickly and evacuated all passengers in line with safety protocols and they moved away from the vehicle before the situation escalated.
It is not known how many passengers were on board.
The travel firm has launched an investigation into the incident.
A Stagecoach Cumbria and North Lancashire spokesman said: “We’re grateful for the professionalism shown by our driver and the co-operation of our passengers.
“Safety is always our absolute priority and a full investigation is now underway.”
Cumbria Fire & Rescue Service said: “Cumbria Fire & Rescue Service was mobilised at 11.20am to a large vehicle fire on the A69 near Corby Hill.
“Three fire engines from Carlisle East, Carlisle West, and Brampton fire stations attended and extinguished the fire using a hose reel jet, drain mat, three breathing apparatus, and a 45mm main jet.
“Crews were in attendance for about an hour and 10 minutes.”
The road was still affected last night. The A69 was partially blocked both ways and the traffic was very slow. It has cleared this morning, Saturday September 13.
