A major project to improve road access in Workington has started.
The Workington Gateway scheme is part of a £33 million regeneration of Workington town centre led by Cumberland Council.
The work involves remodelling the Ramsay Brow T-junction in the town centre where the local road network meets the end of the A66.
Access from the A66 into Workington town centre will be closed for three consecutive weekends starting from yesterday, Friday September 12, at 8pm.
The work is scheduled as follows:
- Friday September 12, 8pm to Monday September 15 6am: A66 closure at Ramsay Brow for utilities diversion
- Friday September 19, 8pm to Monday September 22, 6am: A66 closure continues
- Friday September 26, 8pm to Monday September 29, 6am: Additional full weekend closure
- Friday October 3 to Monday October 6: Contingency closure if required
Impact on public transport and services
- Bus services: During the Ramsay Brow roadworks, the X4/X5 services will be unable to serve stops on Ramsay Brow, Stainburn and Clifton during the closures. From Workington, the service will divert via the A596 towards Lillyhall, and continue along the A595 to rejoin the normal service at Bridgefoot roundabout. This diversion will apply in both directions.
- Waste collections: There will be no disruptions to scheduled waste and recycling collections during the work.
