[T]he University of Cumbria and Tullie House Museum and Art Gallery Trust will sign a memorandum of understanding (Fri 2  June) to formalise a long-standing association between the two organisations.

It’s hoped the agreement will signal even closer ties allowing research and scholarly exchange to flourish along with new learning and continuing professional development.

“The partnership is also intended to be the catalyst for enhancing the cultural landscape of the city and beyond working with other cultural partners in the region,” said Roddy Hunter, director of the University of Cumbria Institute of the Arts.

The agreement follows a similar memo of understanding signed earlier this year linking Carlisle Cathedral with the university.

“The museum and the university have a deep and broad working relationship which includes the university supporting the museum’s staff and organisational development and the museum supporting student teaching and access to collections – we regard it as a perfect symbiotic relationship,”

Andrew Mackay, director of Tullie House Museum and Art Gallery Trust, said. ”The 10th anniversary of the University of Cumbria feels like a turning point – the university is embracing place making and talent development to name but two priorities and this is making a positive impact within Carlisle.”
