[W]hen push comes to shove, pupils from St Paul’s CE Junior School, Barrow, know just what it takes to help raise funds for Bay Hospitals Charity’s Bayb’s Maternity Appeal!

The school is the first to get behind the charity’s “Big Push” campaign, which is encouraging younger school children to complete sponsored laps of their playing field or yard, pushing anything on wheels. For their Big Push, St Paul’s youngsters brought along toy prams and cars, bikes, skateboards, scooters and even wheelie suitcases and a golf caddy!

They also organised an afternoon tea for parents and friends of the school at which they sung – a precursor to a performance the 25-strong school choir is to give in the foyer of Furness General Hospital this coming Monday (19th June). In addition, they printed out pop quiz sheets, which they sold for £1. With a £20 prize, anyone who bought a sheet needs to complete and return it to school by Friday, 30th June, to be in with a chance of winning.

Heidi Bowron, co-ordinator of the Bayb’s Maternity Appeal, said: “The children really took the ‘Big Push’ initiative on board and with their teachers’ support and the support of their parents and school friends, made a really enjoyable event out it. Many congratulations to them.”

Any pre-school or school wanting to stage its own “Big Push” can contact Heidi on 01229 404473 to request a “Big Push” information pack, which contains template posters and sponsor forms, as well as information on the Bayb’s Maternity Appeal, which is funding “extras” for the new maternity unit being built at Furness General Hospital.

These ”extras” fall outside the remit of what the NHS is able to fund but have been added to a shopping list of items, all designed to make the unit second to none in the country while giving it a real home from home feel for local families and for newborns, the best possible start in life.
To find out more and make a donation, call in to the Bay Hospitals Charity office at the entrance to Furness General Hospital or visit Bay Hospitals Charity’s website at www.bayhospitalscharity.org
