The owners of Sedbergh’s Black Bull have relaunched their first food venue.
The Three Hares café and bistro has returned to the town in The Stables in the courtyard of The Black Bull.
It follows a three-year hiatus after its closure during the pandemic.
Run by James Ratcliffe and Nina Matsunaga, the couple behind Tsuchi and The Black Bull, the café previously earned a place in the Good Food Guide alongside other awards and reviews.
Its closure during the pandemic left a gap in the town that the pair said regulars have been asking about ever since.
James Ratcliffe, co-owner of The Black Bull, Tsuchi, and The Three Hares, said: “The aftermath of the pandemic meant it simply wasn’t viable to continue with The Three Hares in its previous location, but we’ve always wanted to bring the café back, and The Stables in the Black Bull courtyard felt like the perfect place to do it.
“We planned to start slowly, get a feel for how it would work, and build up the offering as demand increased.
“Since opening the doors in mid-June, trade has steadily picked up, and it’s been fantastic to see how warmly people have welcomed us back.
“As things develop, we’ll look to widen the menu and, we hope, introduce evening meals too, most likely starting on Fridays and Saturdays.”
The venue will initially be open Tuesday to Saturday from 8.30am to 4pm, serving breakfast, brunch, and lunch.
Menu items include natural yoghurt and granola, overnight oats, sourdough toast, toasties, sausage rolls, scotch eggs, homemade soup, sandwiches, scones, cakes, brownies, blondies, shortbreads, doughnuts, and croissants.
The site also offers artisan teas, coffees, cakes, scones, artisan breads, wines, and beers.
James and Nina aim to expand the offering to serve evening meals in the coming weeks.
