Man found guilty by jury of Workington broken jaw attack

[A] MAN has been found guilty of attacking his friend, whose jaw was broken in two places.

Ritchie Townsend, 24, went on trial at Carlisle Crown Court earlier this week. Townsend denied two charges arising out of an incident at his Napier Street flat in Workington on July 28 last year.

After hearing all evidence in the case, a jury today (FRI) found him guilty on a majority verdict of causing Dean Greenhalgh grievous bodily harm.

A witness had told jurors how Mr Greenhalgh “was knocked out for about 30 seconds” after Townsend hit him in the jaw.

He was treated in hospital, with plates and screws later fitted.

Townsend, who claimed he acted in self-defence, was bailed by Judge Tony Lancaster and is due to be sentenced next month.

*Townsend was found not guilty of a charge of perverting the course of justice which he had faced in relation to the same incident.
