Members of the Royal British Legion and Armed Forces veterans join Eden District Council Councillors to raise a flag for Armed Forces Day.

[A] flag raising ceremony took place at the front of Penrith Town Hall today (19 June 2017) to mark national Armed Forces Day on Saturday 24 June. The event was part of a countrywide programme of events to celebrate and recognise HM Armed Forces – past, present and future.

Eden District Council Chairman, Mary Robinson, raised the Armed Forces Day flag with the Council’s Armed Forces Champion, Councillor Malcolm Temple and representatives of the Penrith and District Branch of The Royal British Legion.

“We are always delighted to proudly fly the flag to celebrate Armed Forces Day, which symbolises the contribution the Armed Forces have and continue to make to our country. We are pleased that members of The Royal British Legion, RAFA, Eden District Council, many of whom proudly served in HM Armed Forces joined us to mark the occasion,” said Council Chairman, Mary Robinson.

Councillor Mary Robinson gave an address at the ceremony, recognising the sacrifices made by local regiments and read from the famous war poem; ‘For the Fallen’ by Robert Laurence Binyon.

Armed Forces Day is an annual event, providing the nation with a dedicated day where people can come together to show their appreciation and support for HM Armed Forces.
