Workington swimmer named in British marathon team for European Junior Championships

[W]orkington swimmer, Thomas Millburn has been named as one of twelve swimmers in the British marathon team that will head to Marseille for the European Junior Championships.

Thomas, 19, is a joint member of both Cockermouth and Workington swim clubs.

He lives in Workington and was selected after a strong 2016 season racing for GBR in both the European and World Junior open water Swimming champs in Italy and Holland respectively.

The actual selection meet was due to be the Elite athlete race in the Great North Swim in Windermere but the event was cancelled due to the weather.

This is Tom’s 4th season as a GBR swimmer which has seen his compete in 4 European Junior Championships and 2 World Junior Championships.

The three-day competition runs from 4 – 6 August and will see swimmers competing across three different distances.

The competition is run across three age groups with 14/15 year olds swimming 5km, 16/17 year olds competing a 7.5km course and 18/19 year olds will tackle the 10km race. Athletes will also compete in two team relays.

Hector Pardoe and Ioan Evans have experience of international competition having competed at the World Junior Championships. Pardoe won bronze in the 5km while Evans challenged for the medals in the 10km in Hoorn, Netherlands last summer.

Phoebe Griffiths also came home from the World Junior Championships with a bronze medal from the team relay.

Marathon Swimming Lead Bernie Dietzig said: “This is an exciting opportunity for the 12 swimmers to experience racing against the best in Europe.

“We have selected a promising team for this competition and I am pleased with the interest shown by all of the swimmers on the team. I see a lot of promise and am excited to see what they can achieve in this environment.”

The British team comprises:

  • Tiegan Child – Beckenham
  • Georgia Darwent – Newcastle Swim Team
  • Ioan Evans – City of Cardiff
  • Rose Foden – Northampton
  • Phoebe Griffiths – Ellesmere College
  • Max Jelfs – Hatfield
  • Maisie Macartney – Thanet
  • Hector Pardoe – Ellesmere College
  • Gordon Mason – Ellesmere College
  • Thomas Millburn – Cockermouth
  • Emilia Sansome – Wycombe District
