Police name biker, 72, killed in A708 crash

[A] motorcyclist has died after crashing his bike on the A708.

At about 7:45pm on Wednesday 9 August 2017 a one vehicle road traffic collision occurred on the A708 road about 900 metres east of Polmoodie, Moffat.

A green coloured BMW R1100 motorcycle being ridden by a 72-year-old man left the roadway and crashed.

Emergency services attended and the driver was treated by ambulance staff however died at the scene.

Police Scotland has named the man as 72-year-old David Arthur Shilton from Wallyford, Musselburgh.

The road was closed for some eight hours to allow a full crash scene investigation to take place. The Procurator Fiscal has been informed.

Constable Scott McCreadie of the Roads Policing Unit said: “The dead man appears to have been travelling at the rear of a group of motorcyclists when the crash happened.

“We are appealing for anyone who may have witnessed this crash to come forward and contact Police Scotland’s Road Policing Unit at Dumfries on 101.”

Investigations into the cause of the crash are ongoing.
