[C]umbria’s Police and Crime Commissioner Peter McCall was delighted to meet up with youngsters from the Wath Brow Hornets Amateur Rugby League FC Youth Section at one of their recent training sessions.
The Wath Brow Hornets recently received just under £2,500 from the Commissioner’s Property Fund, which has enabled them to purchase new training equipment, such as tackle bags, tackle shields, agility equipment and also shelving so that they can store all the new equipment.
Speaking of his visit, Peter McCall said: “It was great to watch the youngsters training, and see first-hand the benefits that the new equipment has brought for them. I am a firm believer in the view that encouraging young people to participate in a positive, inclusive activity that will provide a confidence boosting experience often helps to steer them away from negative behaviours, such as getting involved in anti-social behaviour.
“One of the reasons why I wanted to provide the funding is that tackling anti-social behaviour and helping to steer young people away from getting involved in criminal activities is a priority objective in my Police and Crime. Many of the people I meet say this an area of concern in their communities. However, the police alone cannot solve the problems, and it is only by us working together with clubs like the Wath Brow Hornets, that we will be able to really make a difference. My vision is ‘we – not they’, and this is a great example of one of the ways we can make this a reality.
Martin Brough, Welfare Officer and Youth Secretary at Wath Brow Hornets said: “This financial boost will give us the opportunity to purchase extra and new improved training equipment, which will benefit all of the different age groups throughout the club. We presently run, u6s 7s 8s 9s 11s 12s 14s & 16s age groups, this totals over 140 young players from the local area.”
