Patrick McGahon – Appointed Chair of Carlisle College Board

[P]atrick McGahon has been appointed as Chair of the Carlisle College Board.

Patrick, who lives in the Eden Valley, brings a wealth of experience, having worked as a Board Director in the NHS and the not-for-profit sector for over 20 years.

Patrick is the Director of Finance and Commercial Services at the NHS Business Services Authority and in this role has led the development of an Apprenticeship strategy.  He is also a member of the Health & Financial Management Association (HFMA) Policy and Research Committee, who advise the HFMA on response to government health policy, and instigate research and best practice sharing in healthcare finance.

Patrick, a qualified accountant, having studied A-Level economics at Carlisle College is a graduate of the University of Manchester and has an MBA from Heriot-Watt University.  He is a cycling and running enthusiast and is a keen supporter of Carlisle United.

Patrick’s appointment follows the retirement of long-standing Chair, David Carter, who after 10 years overseeing the development of Carlisle College and its £30 million investment programme, will enjoy his extra spare time pursuing his interests in tennis and travelling.

Patrick will lead the Board of Carlisle College as it embarks upon continued growth and development as part of NCG, one of the largest not-for-profit education and training groups in the UK with six colleges and two national training providers.  The Carlisle College Board, comprising local members, will continue to ensure that the College meets the needs of learners, employers, partners and local communities.

Commenting on his appointment Patrick said “I’m delighted to be taking up the role of Chair of the Carlisle College Board.  I’m passionate about skills development and its paramount importance in growing Carlisle and the surrounding area. I look forward to driving forward the key role that the College has to play in implementing the Cumbria LEP Skills Investment Plan.  I’m a firm believer in lifelong learning and opening up opportunities for all.”

Chief Executive of NCG, Joe Docherty, said “Patrick is sure to be an excellent Chair and the fact that someone of Patrick’s calibre has taken up the position, with his knowledge of the county and its economy, bodes very well for the future of Carlisle College as a part of NCG.”

Steve Salkeld, Acting Principal at Carlisle College, added “It’s great to be welcoming Patrick to our Board.  His experience, insight and commitment to developing skills in the local area will prove very valuable in the continued development of the College.”
