Richard and Debbie Greaves, owners of A Corner of Eden with the ‘Best Green Holiday Home’ winner certificate from the European Holiday Home Awards 2017.

[T]he owners of A Corner of Eden, which offers three luxurious self-catering properties in the Eden Valley in Cumbria, are celebrating after winning a coveted international award.

Its beautifully converted 15th Century barn Angel Barn, which sleeps up to six guests, has been named ‘Best Green Holiday Home’ in the European Holiday Home Awards 2017, beating off fierce competition from 60 holidays cottages from 16 different European countries to claim the accolade and become one of only three European Holiday Home Award winners in the UK.

The European Holiday Home Awards were launched in 2015 by the European Holiday Home Association (EHHA) and showcase the diversity and quality of holiday homes that provide a unique holiday experience.  In winning Best Green Holiday Home, Angel Barn has been commended for being sustainable, having a low impact on the environment and also providing an opportunity for guests to experience local nature while being surrounded by stunning interiors.

Angel Barn’s many green credentials include a ground source heat pump for all heating and hot water, PV panels for electricity, sheep’s wool insulation, Herdwick wool carpets and window sills made using their own planked oak tree.  It also boasts a handmade four poster bed from the original cow stalls of the barn, welcome hampers packed with homemade and local products and everything, from the mattresses, stools and shower screens, to the sofas, chairs and carpets, has been bought within Cumbria. The few things that couldn’t be sourced in Cumbria have been bought within the UK.

Angel Barn’s most recent addition is an outdoor lounge created with eco decking that looks just like railway sleepers but is made from 100% recycled plastic bottles.  It also now has a wood fired hot tub which is off grid and extremely sustainable to run.

Debbie and Richard Greaves, the proud owners of Angel Barn at A Corner of Eden said:

“We are absolutely delighted to have won this award, it’s a testament to the hard work that our family and dedicated team have put in over the last 10 years.

“It’s great that Cumbrian accommodation businesses are internationally renowned, especially when leading the way in luxury environmentally friendly places to stay.”

A Corner of Eden began in 2005 when Debbie and Richard bought a then-derelict farm in Ravenstonedale near Kirkby Stephen. Over the course of the last 12 years they have lovingly converted the old Georgian Farmhouse which sleeps eight guests, Angel Barn and also the Shepherd’s Cottage which now provides a cosy retreat just for two.
