[C]umbria’s contribution to the UK nuclear industry has been highlighted in a new national report launched today by the Nuclear Industry Association and Oxford Economics.

The Centre of Nuclear of Excellence (CoNE) – the partnership that promotes Cumbria as the UK’s capital of nuclear – has welcomed the findings that nuclear and its supply chain adds £4.3 billion in gross value added in the North West region, as well as supporting 57,400 direct and indirect jobs. The report also shows that Cumbria and the North West make the largest contribution by far to nuclear skills growth by training over 1000 new apprentices each year.

CoNE Director Ken McEwan said: “It comes as no surprise that the largest regional impacts highlighted in the report are seen in the North West of England. Cumbria and the wider region are a global centre of nuclear excellence and the beating heart of the UK’s civil nuclear industry. Nowhere else in Europe has so much concentrated nuclear capability and unparalleled access to a world-renowned skills base and pioneering expertise. Our region is a key strategic asset for the UK and our potential to capture global markets and attract further inward investment is tremendous. This report shows we are part of a wider national trend and we are proud to be so.”

CoNE is a partnership of the nuclear sector, businesses and communities in Cumbria working together as a cluster focussed on growth of the Cumbrian and wider UK nuclear economy.
