[S]t Benedict’s students are having a fantastic term sports wise, with some more great wins in football recently.
Both the girls and boys U13 teams have won their semi-finals in the County Cup, taking them through to the finals which will be held in early 2018.
The girls’ team beat Dallam School from Milnthorpe on Wednesday 6th December with a score of 3-1. The boys’ team beat William Howard School from Carlisle 6-1 earlier in the same week.
As well as these wins, St Benedict’s also have both the U13 girls and Year 7 boys through to the last thirty two in the English Schools’ Football (ESFA) National Cup.
The boys’ team travelled to North Shields last week, playing John Spence High School. The boys gave an impressive performance, winning the match 5-0.
Tony Harrison, PE Teacher at St Benedict’s, comments: “I am very proud of the lads after their latest victory. They have a great team spirit and have some very talented lads in the team, they work extremely hard both in training and in games and deserve the success they are enjoying.”
So far in the competition, the boys have beaten West Lakes Academy, Queen Elizabeth Grammar, William Howard School, Morton Academy, and now John Spence High School.
The girls’ team who have also made it through to the same stage, having won 3-2 against Broughton High School at the end of November.
Both teams are now the only Cumbrian teams left in the competition and will progress to the next round. The girls U13 are playing Fred Longworth School from Wigan. The game will be played on Wednesday 10th January at 1.30pm at Whitehaven Amateurs. The Year 7 boys have a home draw against Manchester Grammar or St Augustine School from Blackburn, which is still yet to be played.
Lisa Powe, Subject Leader in PE comments: “It has been a huge pleasure to work with these talented and very determined young players. They have a never give up attitude and epitomise exactly what team spirit is. They have excelled in both the county and national competitions, gaining high levels of praise from their opponents. They are delighted to represent our school and are certainly doing us proud. I am sure more success is only around the corner.”
