West Cumbrian fanciers fitted in a comeback race at the weekend.

After the previous week’s 240-mile test from Marlborough they dropped back to Penkridge for a race 100 miles shorter.

Best home was in the north section of the Derwent Valley Federation where Williams and Hadfield won both the Workington Victoria and Social Limit clubs.

Their winner is a rangy blue cock whose sire was one of the two the partners won in the bonus ball draw for the Transporter Fund.

They were both from Alan Devlin and one was a double grandson of Max from Syndicate lofts.

The dam is a Willem de Bruijn, also from Alan Devlin.

This latest winner was 2nd Open Fed three weeks ago beaten by a loft-mate and has been 27th Fed Marlborough  and 4th club Cannock.

In Harrington Central it was Mr and Mrs Carter and sons who took the honours.

Second win in a consistent season for the Carter family in Harrington Central.

They won with a two-year-old chequer hen which was an exchange bird from John McNichol in the Cumberland Social Circle.

The Flimby club was won by the Varty family with a two-year-old dark hen.

The Federation’s south section was won by the Cleator Moor loft of Nolan, Hetherington, Coultas and Easdon with a yearling red hen.

The sire is a Lambrecht red cock from Danny Rodgers while the dam is a mealy hen off the loft’s Mangotsfield Combine winner when paired to a grandson of the loft’s famous Ponty cock.

Best in Fed South section for Nolan, Hetherington, Coultas and Easdon.

The red hen’s sisters flew very well in 2024 taking second Fed twice on the same second as their Fed winner.

The Penkridge birds were liberated at 9.30am in a light south west wind and the Cleator Moor winning bird was clocked just before 11.54am.

She had covered the 137 miles at 57.3mph.

Williams and Hadfield had the best bird in the north section flying at 57.8mph.

Joe Tomlinson and Brian Banks continue to enjoy a good season and although having to settle for second in Cleator Moor, won the Lowca club.

Their winner is a very consistent yearling mealy hen who won the Fed and Amal from Appleton 3 last year as a YB.

Best bird from Penkridge for Williams and Hadfield.

She had been previously 14th Fed and Amal from Appleton 2 and after her win was put away for the season.

She was among the prizes again from Appleton this year winning both Cleator Moor and Lowca as well as the south section of the Fed.

She came again from Marlborough last week to be sixth south section, beaten by two loftmates.

Chequer hen won again for Bewsher, son and Park in Egremont

After Penkridge on Saturday, when she was second south section, she now has eight first prizes in all competitions.

Her sire is a mealy cock, again off Niewe Goede Rode, while the dam is a blue hen who is a daughter of Best Boy Kittle who is responsible for four Fed winners for the partners – as well as a host of winners in England and Ireland.

In Egremont Peter Bewsher and Wayne Park were top of the sheet again with a chequer hen which also won two weeks ago.

A sweet mealy hen now has eight firsts for Tomlinson and Banks.

Home bred, her dam is a hen the partners call Frances. She’s a direct daughter of Brolin and The Beautiful.

The sire is a direct son of Stefaan’s Favourite and Evi, the pair coming from Ian Stafford’s loft. They were gifted to the Egremont loft by a good friend Paul Cree.
