BAE’s Central Training Facility

[L]eading contractor, Wates Construction, has grown its Cumbria workforce by nearly 50% as part of a continued recruitment drive to strengthen its presence in the county.

With live projects including BAE Systems Submarines’ new Central Training Facility in Barrow and the flagship £30m Campus Whitehaven, as well as an order book for the county of over £50m, Wates is strategically growing its local team. Current vacancies include site managers, quantity surveyors at a variety of levels, planners and design managers.

The roles are based across the county including in Carlisle and South Lakeland and also Kendal where the contractor took up new premises at Helm Bank last year. Interested parties are asked to contact the Wates team at [email protected]

Tony Shenton, Business Unit Director, Wates Construction North West, commented: “We know that our continued success is down to the proficiency of our people and recruiting the best in the industry remains a huge priority for us.

“Our team has grown substantially over the past year and we are now in a position to offer more clients the merits of working with a trusted contractor like Wates.

“We have a lot to offer in terms of employee benefits and are keen to recruit from within the county as well as encouraging those looking for a positive lifestyle change to come and experience the incredible landscape, outdoor adventure and countryside living on offer in Cumbria.”

Wates Construction’s increasing presence in Cumbria is also bringing a raft of social and economic benefits for local people. The contractor has committed to hosting site visits from every student attending St Benedict’s Catholic High School and Mayfield School in Whitehaven, with six classes being shown the inner workings of the Campus Whitehaven construction site to-date.

Wates has also partnered with Carlisle United Football Club to deliver a series of holiday sports coaching camps to highlight the importance of health and wellbeing at schools in West Cumbria.
