[A] group of A Level Mathematics students have triumphed in a prestigious Mathematics competition.

A team of students from Barrow Sixth Form College have been awarded first prize in the national Mathematics Miniatures competition.

The contest, run jointly by MathsWorldUK, UKMT, University of Leeds, and IMO2019 Ltd, challenged students across the country to produce a video on a Mathematical surprise.

Barrow Sixth Form’s winning entry, a Non-Euclidean Surprise, was created by students Caitlin Fawkes, Matthew Templeton and Robyn Halcrow and explored ‘Non-Euclidean Geometry’ – in particular the effect of drawing 2D shapes in 3D planes and how this affects the properties of the 2D shapes.

Ian Ironmonger, Head of Mathematics at Barrow Sixth Form College, said: “We are thrilled that our students have been named the winners of the Mathematics Miniatures competition.

“Given that this is a national contest, and open to any school or college in the country, this is a major achievement for our Mathematics students.

“The video demonstrated our students’ ability to clearly communicate mathematical concepts and present their ideas in a creative way so as to inspire others to engage with Mathematics.”

The students’ competition success follows an impressive appearance at the UKMT Senior team challenge held at Lancaster University.

Caitlin and Robyn joined fellow students Liam Edgley and Elliott Stockdale to compete against other schools and colleges from the regional area and finished in sixth place out of 22 teams – a new record for Barrow Sixth Form College.
