[O]n Friday 12th January 2018 Rotary in Great Britain & Ireland (RIBI) President Denis Spiller will be in Cockermouth & Silloth to find out first hand how Rotary takes action in our communities.
At lunch time he will be a guest of Cockermouth Club and will hear about the reaction of Club members during and following the devastating floods of recent years. He will also hear about the support the Club and Rotarians in the region have given to Mountain Rescue Teams and to the provision of Public Access Defibrillators both in the town and surrounding area.

President of Cockermouth Rotary says “The Rotary Club of Cockermouth is delighted to welcome Denis to one of our meetings, it gives us the opportunity to showcase the great work going on in the Cockermouth area by our members. We will take him to see many of the areas in the town which can be affected by floods and hopefully demonstrate to him the work we have done to help organisations and individuals with their recovery”
Denis is spearheading a national campaign aimed at enabling members of our communities who want to make a difference to do so in ways that meet their modern lifestyle and expectations. No longer is there a need for weekly meetings with a meal and all the formality that can go with such events. In comes a focus on planning and undertaking projects in the community whilst having fun together.
So, following a tour around some of the areas affected by the floods in Cockermouth Denis will visit a team of new Rotarians being set up in Silloth. The Silloth club has revitalised itself in recent months engaging in new ways with local community activists. People already working in small groups to organise events for the town have been quick to grab the opportunities Rotary offers for working together not just as colleagues but as friends.
Owen Martin, one of the new members in Silloth Club says ” I felt very privileged to be asked to become a Rotarian, after seeing the great work Rotary had done not only for Silloth but communities around the world. It’s great to be part of such a diverse group of like minded individuals wanting to support others, enjoying the friendship & fellowship of such a great international organisation.
Other opportunities for a new style of Rotary are being actively pursued in Wigton & Carlisle.
