CALLING ALL LOCAL ARTISTS – A creative response to remembrance

[C]umbria’s Museum of Military Life in Carlisle Castle are looking for local people to creatively express their feelings in the Museum’s first open art exhibition, Remembrance100 open to the general public between the 21 May-2 September 2018. The exhibition based around the theme of remembrance is open to all residents of Cumbria and Dumfries and Galloway and has no age restriction.

With 2018 marking 100 years since the end of the First World War and the start of remembrance as we know it today the Museum want artists to look at the impact of Remembrance. This can be reflected in the question ‘What does Remembrance mean to me?’ What do you think of when you hear the word Remembrance?  How does it make you feel?  The museum wants artists to creatively express their feelings.

The exhibition is an opportunity to not only remember the First World War but to explore how Remembrance has evolved over the last 100 years and is expressed today.

Jamie Barnes, Curator of the Remembrance100 exhibition said: “It is important that we take time to consider what remembrance means to us in this final year of commemoration. Visual art can be a very instant and powerful way of getting an idea or emotion across. We want all artists in the region whether professional or amateur to take up their brushes, pencils, cameras and rollers and bring remembrance alive for the many people who will see the exhibition”.

The free to enter exhibition which has been funded through the Heritage Lottery Fund is an opportunity to not only remember the First World War but to explore how remembrance has evolved over the last 100 years and is expressed today.
