[A]ward-winning housebuilder, Story Homes, has launched its 2018 apprenticeship programme, following on from two successful years of the scheme which has seen the fast-growing business take on 24 apprentices.

Story Homes’ focus on recruiting apprentices forms part of its ongoing commitment to investing in and developing young talent. Its apprenticeship programme, alongside its graduate scheme and work experience offered, is a key element of its strategy to ensure it can achieve its ambitious future plans, as well as making a contribution towards closing the skills gap in the industry.

The developer’s Aspire Apprenticeship Scheme, first launched in 2016 and aims to recruit the brightest and most passionate school and college leavers from 16 years and upwards. Apprentices undertake a full development programme which includes working towards an NVQ Level 2 or Level 3, on-the-job training and the potential to move into trainee site management at the end of the programme.

In September 2017, twelve bricklaying, joinery and technical apprentices joined Story Homes, taking part in a five-day residential team building and induction programme before starting their roles on-site or in the office. As a result of the success of the 2017 intake and due to increasing popularity of the programme, the housebuilder will offer apprenticeships in bricklaying and joinery for 2018 in Cumbria and the North West.

Shelley Hayward, Talent and Development Manager at Story Homes, said: “As a rapidly growing housebuilder, we recognise the importance of playing our part in addressing the skills shortage in the construction industry. Bringing apprentices into the business is a crucial part of our recruitment strategy. By providing young people with sustainable positions and training programmes, we can find the next generation of talent to continue Story Homes’ growth.

“Following on from the success of last year’s apprenticeship programme, we are delighted to be recruiting once again and are looking forward to meeting the candidates. By joining an expanding and fast-paced business like ours, our apprentices can not only earn while they learn, but they are also well-placed to take advantage of a variety of career opportunities during their time with us.”
