[A] group of Barrow police officers and staff will be taking part in a mammoth Boxathon to raise money for Sport Relief.
The 8-strong team will commence their 3-hour circuit challenge at 12noon on March 21st, at Furness Catholic Boxing Club on Dalkeith Street.
Exercises will include skipping, sit-ups, squats, kettlebells, punch-bags and punch-pads, and will feature rounds of two minute bursts with one minute rest in between.
PC Paul Ryan, who has organised the event, is hoping that people come along to show their support: “After running a boxing club on a voluntary basis for many years, the opportunity to utilise this, whilst promoting physical exercise and raising money for a worthwhile cause, is something I feel very strongly about.
“The theme this year is ‘thons’, and going the extra mile, which is why I thought it would be good to do the 3 hour circuit challenge. This will be a physical and mental challenge, but a small blip compared to the issues facing those we are raising money for.
“I hope this is the first of many Sport Relief challenges that we do. I would encourage anyone who can do to donate to this challenge, either online or via the sponsorship form in Barrow Station.
“Please give generously, and feel free to come along and support the team. It will be an open door policy and any encouragement will be greatly appreciated.”
Superintendent Rob O’Connor said: “It is good to see that my staff are supporting this really worthy cause. It will be a tough three hours for them, and I will be there actively encouraging them from the side lines.
“They have given up their own time, and I would like to thank PC Paul Ryan for organising the event, and echo his comments about giving generously to support those who are less fortunate.”
