[N]etwork Rail is urging people using level crossings on the Cumbrian coast line to take care at level crossings, as a new timetable comes into effect next month.

The new timetable includes the provision of extra Sunday services and some additional changes to current services from 20 May 2018.

Ben Parish, route level crossing manager for Network Rail, said: “We know when people use a level crossing frequently they often assume they know the timetable and when trains pass through. “The new timetable changes will affect level crossing users in rural areas as there will be more trains running, especially on a Sunday.

“We are urging people living and working in rural areas to be aware of the changes. Level crossing users are reminded to always adhere to safety measures and advice provided to cross the railway line correctly.”

The new timetable changes will affect user worked crossings and footpath crossings on the following train lines:

  • Carnforth to Whitehaven line
  • Whitehaven to Maryport line
  • Maryport to Carlisle line
