[C]OPELAND councillors have re-stated their unanimous backing to the principle of a new nuclear power station at Moorside.

Councillors voted to re-affirm their endorsement of the project and to continue to support the principle of the new-build on land next to Sellafield.

NuGen, the firm behind the plans, announced a pause in the development of the project in May 2017, pending a strategic review. An announcement on the future of the project is expected soon.

Councillor David Moore, Portfolio Holder for Nuclear, asked for – and received – councillors’ support at a meeting of the Full Council.

The council’s support is subject to key issues being resolved to its satisfaction, the meeting heard, including infrastructure provision, socio-economic matters, environmental concerns and the long-term legacy for the borough’s communities.

Coun Moore said: “This will have a significant impact on the local economy, providing new job opportunities both through the construction process and the longer-term operation of the plant and through the provision of supply chain support services.

“In addition, the project will bring ancillary investment in local infrastructure and support the council’s wider growth agenda.

“The development of a new nuclear power station also strengthens our status around the UK Centre of Nuclear Excellence and as part of the global nuclear network.

“This reaffirms to those behind the project that our borough is committed to, and supportive of, the Moorside project and we want to see the proposals come forward.”
