[A] MAN has been warned a lengthy prison term is inevitable after he was convicted of repeatedly raping one girl and sexually assaulting another.

Richard John Winn, 56, went on trial at Carlisle Crown Court earlier this week. He denied 12 charges alleging historical sex crimes against two children.

But this afternoon a jury found him guilty, unanimously, of repeatedly rapes of one pre-teen girl, and multiple sex assaults on another.

Jurors heard evidence from both of Winn’s victims – now adults – during the trial.

“I couldn’t get away,” one told a police officer in interview. “He just wouldn’t stop.” Asked how many times he had raped her”, she replied: “I couldn’t give you a number.”

The female he sexually assaulted told police: “No matter how much I said ‘no’, he would carry on.”

Asked in a social media message years later to explain his historical actions, Winn replied: “Don’t know. I can’t believe I did that sort of thing myself. I just wish God will forgive me when he finally takes me.”

Winn, of Derwent Avenue, Maryport, was granted bail and told he would be sentenced on a date to be fixed.

He must now sign the sex offenders’ register, and was told by Recorder Julie Clemitson: “The jury having convicted you of the serious offences means that you will, inevitably, be facing a lengthy custodial sentence.”

Winn was found not guilty of two alleged sex assaults on one of the females.
