On Tuesday 11th September Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their Great Annual Show & Sale of 5,000 Mule Gimmer Shearlings, ‘2’ Shear Mule Ewes, Suffolk cross & Texel Shearlings & Ewes 3 Shear & above, kindly sponsored by Jelf, Murray Farmcare and Peter Horn Mobile Sheep Dipping.
A wonderful entry was offered here at Penrith, with some outstanding consignments, a credit to all vendors.
A large crowd of onlookers enjoyed the pre-sale prize show judging. Mule classes were judged by Mr Tom Pollock, Town Gate, Ainstable & Mr Henry Grissell, Turness Farm, Dallington. They were presented with an extremely strong show of Mules in each class.
A fabulous show of sheep were out for judging. Receiving the Champion Mule Shearling rosette and The John Mounsey Memorial Trophy was Mr J Ackerley, Milton Mains, with his pen of 10 outstanding, powerful sheep, achieving £175, topping this section on the day, purchased by Messrs Warren.
A fantastic show of Mule 2 Shears were offered, peaking at £158 for a pen of 15 from Mr BW Hewitson, Shatton Lodge Farm, purchased by regular buyer Mr Duckworth.
Receiving the Champion Mule “2” Shear rosette and The John Dickinson, High House Memorial Trophy was a cracking pen of 15 from Messrs J Dickinson, High House, purchased by Messrs BJ Thomlinson for £145 per head.
The judging of Continental Shearling class was in the capable hands of Brian Bowness, Bank Farm.
Topping the sale at £260 was a single, tight skinned Texel Shearling from Mr D Barker, Derwent Dale Farm, Scarborough, purchased by Messrs Richardson, Low Garth. This run of outstanding sheep averaged £179.25.
Considering the trade in many other centres across the country the trade was way past most people’s expectations. Over 4,000 sheep were offered, and sold with prices being firm and stable from start to finish.
Averages
Mule Shearlings averaged £138 (-£2 on the year), no pens sold under the £100 mark.
Mule “2” Shears averaged £131 (-£7 on the year).
Continental Shearlings averaged £140 (+£6 on the year).
